Love is in the air...:
Love in Action
Category: It's all about love
Frank wants to be always busy ( my impression of him on the first day of school). He loved helping people and is quick to offer assistance when somebody needs one. It is indeed a very good attitude of a child who love showing the art of helping.
As a teacher, my first impression of Frank was : smart and helpful with a downside - can't keep still. He does sit still after being warn of the clicking of the desk noise pollution in my class but after a minute or two, the sound starts coming back until he gets my attention and to call his attention with a look that says "stop!". But to his classmates, it is a bit annoying. It is becoming an issue with his classmates because they can't do things without a Frank that is always ahead of them. The problem is that Frank is so concern about others but not concern about his work in school. At the end of the day, his school work will be unfinish because he is busy with his classmate's business. Within a week, his classmates started avoiding him, excluding him from play, ultimately, avoiding his presence.
This went on and my mind begin to wonder why is he acting this way? One day, I told Frank to stay after school because I need to talk to him. Boy, I can see he was glad I got his attention.
Tell me about yourself, Frank. I want to know more about you. This is what he said:
I forgot to take my meds today. Huh? What? Did I hear you right? Meds for what? He is only 8. My mind was going in circles. Finally, I was back to my planet and ask what the meds are about. Oh, I have to take the meds to calm me down. Why? Am I making you nervous? "No", he said. The doctor gave me pills to take so I can sit still. That moment, it is coming all in one piece - Frank has ADD or ADHD. My heart sank upon hearing this...
"Ok, I understand" is all I could say. You think you can overcome this without taking those pills? "Yes!" was his response. I am trying my best to overcome this but it is hard. I prayed and hope to win over this but sometimes it is hard, very hard. I just can not control myself. My heart felt a pinch, hoping I can do something for this child. He is only 8 years old and has to go through that struggle.
But what can I do?
So be it. All I can do is to show love and understanding to this young man who struggles at an early age. Loving and understanding a child with ADHD needs a lot of patience with inattentiveness, over-activity, impulsivity, or a combination.
